ADESHA
Pure, powerful and sultry are just a few words people have used to describe the voice of Adesha Johnson. In addition to her being a singer, she is acclaimed as a “lyrical genius”. Combing her voice and lyrics with the musical expertise of keyboardist Allen Ross, bassist Aaron Baugh, and drummer Brian Braziel, core members of her band “Seven”, what you get is an awesome musical experience. If you haven’t heard them, you are truly missing out.
Adesha attribute her love for singing to two things, first, being born in a musical family. Her father is a trained choral singer and guitarist, and her mother is a vocalist who performed regularly in the Nevada area and later in San Francisco’s famous “beach Blanket Babylon”. Second, she believes her love for singing and writing songs is a result of being born in the seventies, a time when music was valued for its powerful, honest, and inspirational content. Some of her inspirations of that time are, Steve Wonder, Donny Hathaway, The Temptations, Steely Dan, Marvin Gaye, and Sly and the Family Stone.
About five years ago, Adesha who was a recent college graduate, decided to dedicate her time and energy to performing and creating music. Upon the loss of her late cousin George C. Scott, she began writing reflective songs and thought it would be great to share them with the world. With the help of her friends and family she was able to put together a band of extremely talented and skilled musicians. It was not long after their initial coffee house gigs that they started to get lots of positive attention. One of their listeners hooked them up with a well known performance venue in the Bay Area, Kimball’s East. Their first show there had over 200 guests and upon their return a month later they had over 300 guests. By the end of the year Adesha and Seven performed for the “City of Oakland”, Mayor Willie Brown, Terry McMillan, San Francisco’s Juneteenth Festival, and they opened for vocalist Ledisi, Goapele, and gospel diva Kim Burrell.
Currently, Adesha and “Seven” have completed their first maxi-single entitled “How I Feel About You”. It is getting a lot of attention especially through internet radio stations and myspace.com. They continue to perform live at venues located in the downtown Oakland area, mainly Maxwell’s Lounge. Adesha is ready to soar to new heights and aspires for her and the band to be internationally known. As one of her viewers have said in an e-mail to record executives, “Anyone who knows me, knows that I don’t brag on many artist unless I know that they can back it up. I’m telling you, you can’t lose with this one. Music needs her flavor, energy, message, and style. I believe her image, and vibe will not return void. She’s a “Go-getter”. That’s my word. Check her out at: Adeshjohnson.com. it’s just a matter of time! Don’t let it come back to haunt you.”
